Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are now officially at the halfway mark of the school year and have gained 1.5 hours of daylight since December 21st. It is amazing how that extra sunlight brightens up our day. This week is looking particularly nasty as far as the weather goes. It might be an idea to pack an extra sweater for students in case the school is chilly. Please find in this newsletter, information about upcoming events at Robert Ogilvie Elementary School and in the district.
Variety Children’s Charity: The Variety Children’s Charity is currently raising funds for the Vancouver Children’s Hospital by selling collector pins. Our school is one of many selling these collector pins at our office. The pins have a theme of “Monsters Inc.†and can be purchased at the office for $3.00. The pins will sell quickly. Please support this worthy fundraiser and purchase your pin today!
Pink Shirt Day Campaign: Pink Shirt Day will be held nationally on Wednesday, February 27th. Students and staff will be encouraged to participate in this day wearing pink shirts, hats, jewelry, etc. T-shirts are now available at the office at a cost of $7.00. You can stop by the office to purchase these t-shirts or fill in the order at the bottom of the newsletter. We will have a few adult sizes as well if you wish to purchase an adult t-shirt. We are able to order   t-shirts at this price until January 31st if we sell out. To learn more about Pink Shirt Day, please check out: www.pinkshirtday.ca .
LEGO Night: Thank you to Mrs. Bulmer for planning and supervising a very successful LEGO night last Friday evening. The students who attended had a wonderful time. Thank you to the P.A.C. for providing prizes for this event.
Back Parking Lot: Traffic issues are getting worse in the back school parking lot. Parents dropping off their children are entering the exit only and creating traffic issues. Please remember the posted speed limit as many students are running through the parking lot, possibly not paying attention and with the time of year it makes it even harder to see people. Please make sure to back in to the stalls. Students are reminded not to go behind parked vehicles or climb on the snow hills, as this is hazardous.
Strong Start Calendars: Please find the Strong Start calendars for our district for February at: http://www.earlylearning.prn.bc.ca . This link provides lots of information for families with children 0-5 years old. Daddy and Me Gym night will be held on Wednesday, February 13th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Robert Ogilvie. This is a great opportunity for young children to spend some quality time with their daddy. Please contact the Strong Start co-coordinators for further information.
E.R.A.S.E. Website: The Ministry of Education has begun a website regarding bullying, which can be found at: http://www.erasebullying.ca.  This site is a very valuable tool for students, staff and parents.  It includes videos and definitions that can be shared with children and used to facilitate conversations both at home and at school.  Please take a few moments to check out the information on line.
Families R.O.C.K.: The Sixth Annual Parent conference “Families R.O.C.K.†will be held on Saturday, March 9th. Registration packages and information about speakers and sessions can be found on line at: http://www.earlylearning.prn.bc.ca. Registering early is recommended, as then you will have a better selection of sessions to attend.
Kindergarten Registrations: Families with children who will be five years old prior to December 31st, 2013, are able to register their child for kindergarten. Registrations are now open. Please feel free to come and register at your earliest convenience. Please bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization records. For your convenience, registrations can be printed from our website: http://www.ogilvie.prn.bc.ca .
