May Newsletter 2013

Monday, May 6th, 2013

Dear Parents and Guardians,

May has finally arrived and Mother Nature has some nice weather planned for us this week.  We have a busy month ahead of us and some great news and deadlines.  Please find this information in our newsletter.

Earth Day Scavenger Hunt:  Thank you to all participants who completed the Earth Day scavenger hunt.  We had 20% of our student population participate along with 2 parents.  This is a great effort to show our community that we care about making a difference to the environment.  The top class for participation was Grade 4/5 taught by Mr. Flury and Mrs. Bulmer.  Thank you to the Environmental Club and Mrs. MacDonald for assisting with this activity and for their efforts to make our school a “greener” place.  Students participated in making pledges for Earth Day.  Check out these pledges on the bulletin board by the computer lab. Water bottle Wednesday counts will continue in May.

Books Are Something to Tweet About: Our school wide reading contest will be completed on May 11th.  Please have students complete the forms and return to school by May 14th.  Students have an opportunity to earn 600 house points for their team.   Thank you for parents and staff who are encouraging participation in this contest.

Scholastic Book Fair:  Thank you to Mrs. Bulmer for hosting our second Scholastic Book Fair this year.  Students and parents are able to purchase books until Thursday after school.  All proceeds from the book fair are used to provide materials for the library.  Thank you for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair.

Robert Ogilvie Pre-School:  Yes, you heard it correctly!  There will be a preschool program starting in September 2013 at Robert Ogilvie Elementary School.  The program will run three days a week from 12:30 – 3:15 pm and will cost $160/month.  Families who qualify for childcare subsidy will not have to pay.  We have room for 10 preschool children born in 2009 or 2010 who are living in the Robert Ogilvie catchment area.  For more information, please talk with Pam or Lana at Strong Start or call Jaimelia Turner at 250-794-7336.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our school and will be stationed in the Strong Start room.

Kindergarten 2013-2014:  We are currently accepting registrations for kindergarten students for 2013-2014.  Please make sure to register as soon as possible to assist us in planning a number of activities for our newest students.  The first event for these students and their families is the “Welcome to Kindergarten” session being held on Thursday, June 6th.  Children who are registered for kindergarten will receive an invitation shortly in the mail.

P.A.C. News:  The  “Annual Robert Ogilvie Garage Sale” will be held on Friday May 10th from 3p.m.-7p.m. and on Saturday May 11th from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the gym at Robert Ogilvie. We will be taking donations all week.  Drop off items:  just call 785-8195 and you can arrange to drop off your items. Have donations picked up? Email bmacdonald@prn.bc.ca and we can arrange to pick up your donations from your home. We will also be accepting bottles and cans. They will be taken to the bottle depot and the money received will go towards the “New Playground” project. All the money that is made from the garage sale will go towards the “New Playground” project. Now that Spring is finally here, some spring cleaning might turn up some donations! If you are interested in helping with the garage sale (any amount of time is appreciated) just email us at: robertogilviepac@gmail.com.   Thank you for your support!

Renovations:  Our school has been undergoing some renovations this year.  We would like to thank the maintenance department and the technology department of the School District for the wonderful work they are doing at the school to make our building better.

Sports Teams:  Thank you to Mrs. McCracken and Mrs. Anderson for helping to coach the badminton team this year.  A total of 30 students were able to participate in the district tournament last week.  Your expertise and time commitment to this sport are truly appreciated.  We will begin training students for the district track and field event shortly.  If you are able to assist in this sport, please contact Mr. Peterson.

2013-2014:  In order to assist our staff with planning divisions and supplies for next year, we would ask that all families complete the form at the end of this newsletter and return it as soon as possible. Thank you for your assistance in this item.

School Speech Contest: Thank you to Mr. Flury for organizing this annual event this year.  The speech contest will be held on May 17th with our chosen representatives going to the district speech contest on May 24th.  Parents are welcome to come and listen to our students on Friday, May 17th at 9:00 a.m.

S.P.C.A. Club:  We have a new student club happening at our school.  The S.P.C.A. Club meets on Friday after schools.  All students are welcome to attend.

Destination Conservation:  Many of our students have been attending Destination Conservation with other schools over the last two years.  The final meeting for this series of workshops will be held on May 15th.  Students have worked very hard this year to learn about water conservation.  Thank you to Mrs. Gauthier and Mrs. MacDonald for sponsoring our students in these workshops.

Dr. Kearney Middle School Open House:  Our grade 6 students and their families are invited to Dr. Kearny Middle School for an open house on Wednesday, May 29th at 6:30 p.m.  This is an opportunity for our grade 6 students to participate in activities to welcome them to a new school and to meet the staff and some students.  Please keep this date open if you would like to see or participate in this open house.

With spring well on its way, we would also like to suggest that students continue to bring extra clothes in case they fall in water of mud during the breaks.  This saves time on making phone calls home and interrupting parents to bring a change of clothes for their child should they get wet or muddy at recess or lunch. We would like to also thank parents and guardians for taking off their outside shoes and boots in the mudrooms.  This is helping keep the dirt, mud and water out of the hallways. It also ensures students have dry feet at they walk down the hall after breaks (when they don’t have shoes on).

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kathy Scheck  - Principal                         Mr. Karl Peterson - Vice Principal
